## What Are Toll Roads?

Toll roads are privately operated roads where drivers pay a fee to use them. In NSW, all toll roads are electronically tolled, which means there are no cash booths. Payment is made through a toll account or pass.

Toll prices depend on:

- The toll road used
- Distance travelled
- Vehicle class

This article focuses on **Class A** vehicles, also known as passenger vehicles.

---

## Vehicle Class A: What Qualifies as a Passenger Vehicle?

In NSW, a Class A vehicle is defined as:

- Motor vehicles that are **12.5 metres or less in length**, and
- **2.8 metres or less in height**

> Note: For the Eastern Distributor and M5 South-West Motorway, Class A height limits apply only up to **2.0 metres** for vehicles with three or more axles.

Common Class A vehicles include:

- Sedans
- SUVs
- Utes
- Small vans
- Vehicles towing light trailers or small caravans (if the combined dimensions meet Class A requirements)

## How to Pay Tolls

There are three main ways to pay for toll road travel:

### 1\. **Toll Account**

The most convenient option for regular users. Tolls are automatically deducted and you receive an electronic statement.

### 2\. **Toll Pass**

Ideal for infrequent users or visitors. You can purchase a pass before or shortly after travel.

### 3\. **Cover Past Trips**

You can backdate:

- **Up to 5 days** with a pass
- **Up to 10 days** with an account

Unpaid tolls may result in a toll invoice with additional fees.

---

## Understanding Toll Invoices and Fees

If tolls are not paid within the allowed backdate window:

- A toll invoice will be sent to the vehicle owner
- Additional admin fees may apply
- If still unpaid, an infringement notice can be issued

---

## Let's Wrap Up

As of April 2025, new toll prices are in effect for all major Sydney toll roads. For Class A passenger vehicles, charges vary by motorway and distance travelled. Make sure your vehicle class is correctly recognised and you have a valid toll payment method to avoid additional fees.
