## What Are Double Demerits?

Double demerit points are a holiday road safety initiative enforced by police in NSW and the ACT. During these designated periods, motorists caught committing specific high-risk offences will receive twice the usual number of demerit points on their driver record.

## Offences That Attract Double Demerits

The offences that will incur double demerits over Easter include:

- Speeding
- Illegal use of a mobile phone while driving
- Not wearing a seatbelt (driver and passengers)
- Riding a motorcycle without a helmet

Additionally, **school zone offences** can carry **extra penalties**, and mobile phone detection cameras remain active across both NSW and the ACT. A mobile phone offence during this period can attract **10 demerit points and a $410 fine**, or **$544 in a school zone**.

## Why Are Double Demerits in Place?

Double demerits are designed to curb risky driving behaviours during periods of high traffic, such as holidays and long weekends. The aim is to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on the road by encouraging safer driving habits.

According to NSW Roads Minister, double demerits are a proven deterrent that save lives. "This scheme sends a clear message that dangerous behaviour behind the wheel won't be tolerated."

## How Long Do Demerit Points Stay on Record?

In NSW, demerit points remain active on a driver’s record for **three years** from the date of the offence. All licence holders begin with zero points, and points are accumulated for each offence committed.

## Upcoming Double Demerit Dates in 2025

In addition to Easter, double demerit periods in [NSW](https://www.carexplore.com.au/tag/nsw/) and ACT will apply during the following public holidays:

- **ANZAC Day**: 24 April to 27 April 2025
- **King’s Birthday**: 6 June to 9 June 2025 (*school zone penalties apply on 6 June*)
- **Labour Day**: 3 October to 6 October 2025
- **Christmas to New Year**: 24 December 2025 to 4 January 2026

## Other States and Territories

Double demerits are **not enforced** in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, or the Northern Territory. However, **Western Australia** and **Queensland** have their own variations of the policy:

- In **Western Australia**, double demerits apply over holiday periods and cover a broader range of offences.
- In **Queensland**, repeat offenders of certain high-risk violations may receive double demerits **any time of the year**, not just during holidays.

## A Reminder to All Road Users

Authorities are urging all motorists to plan their journeys, stay well-rested, avoid distractions, and stick to speed limits.

"Every life lost on our roads is one too many," said a NSW Police spokesperson. "The Easter holidays should be a time of celebration, not tragedy. Drive safely and make it home."
