NSW drivers no longer have to crawl through every roadwork zone at the reduced limit when no work is happening, but there is one important catch.

Since 1 July 2026, temporary roadwork speed limits must be removed outside construction hours when it is safe to do so. The change is designed to stop unnecessary slowdowns while keeping lower limits in place where changed road conditions still create a risk.

## What has changed

The new Traffic Control at Work Sites standard applies across NSW. When workers are off site and conditions allow, the temporary roadwork speed limit should be lifted.

That does not mean roadwork zones are a free-for-all. Drivers must follow the limit displayed on the signs at the time, including any reduced limit left in place for lane changes, uneven surfaces, barriers, equipment or other hazards.

## Why drivers need to pay attention

The rule is about making temporary limits match the conditions, not giving motorists permission to ignore a signed speed restriction. If the lower number is still showing, it is still the legal limit.

For drivers, the practical advice is simple. Look at the signs when you enter the work zone and do not assume the limit will be the same on every trip or at every hour of the day.

## The controversy behind the change

Roadwork limits left in place with no workers visible have long frustrated motorists. NSW says the new standard aims to cut those unnecessary delays while retaining protection for crews, pedestrians and drivers when it is needed.

The government says safety rules have not been weakened. Work-zone limits remain enforceable whenever they are displayed.
