The [Victorian](https://www.carexplore.com.au/tag/victoria/) Government is set to introduce sweeping new regulations that will significantly reduce heavy truck traffic on inner west streets. As part of preparations for the upcoming West Gate Tunnel opening later this year, six 24-hour No-Truck Zones will be established across key roads in Melbourne’s west.

## Where the Ban Applies

The No-Truck Zones will be implemented on:

- Francis Street and Somerville Road in Yarraville
- Buckley Street and Moore Street in Footscray
- Blackshaws Road in Altona North
- Hudsons Road in Spotswood

These measures aim to remove thousands of trucks from residential streets each day, diverting them to the new West Gate Tunnel, which is designed to handle higher freight volumes with improved safety and efficiency.

## Who Is Exempt?

While the regulations are strict, there are several exemptions to ensure essential services remain uninterrupted. Permitted vehicles include:

- Buses, tow trucks, concrete trucks, and waste disposal trucks
- Two-axle trucks not transporting shipping containers
- Emergency service and police vehicles
- Motor homes
- Trucks garaged within the zones

Deliveries, construction, maintenance, and vehicle-related services will also be allowed access under the exemption policy.

## Smart Cameras to Monitor Compliance

Enforcement will be handled using advanced roadside camera technology. The newly contracted provider, Sensor Dynamics, will install smart cameras that can detect heavy vehicles and assess whether they qualify for exemptions. Non-compliant drivers may face fines for unauthorised entry into No-Truck Zones.

## Background and Planning

The regulations follow a 2022 trial that assessed the impact of truck curfews and restrictions in the area. The initiative is part of a larger consultation process and strategic plan to improve safety, air quality, and overall liveability in Melbourne’s growing western suburbs.

## Official Statement

> "These regulations and the smart cameras will help us take thousands of trucks a day off local streets right across the inner west, improving safety and air quality for the community when the West Gate Tunnel opens later this year."
> – Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne
