**T**he Allan Labor Government has announced a major public transport initiative to help ease cost-of-living pressures for older [Victorians](https://www.carexplore.com.au/tag/victoria/). From **1 January 2026**, all **Victorian Seniors Card holders** will receive **free public transport across the state every weekend**.

This new policy, funded through the 2025/26 Victorian Budget, will allow more than **650,000 eligible seniors** to travel on **trains, trams, and buses at no cost** on weekends—expanding the current free travel zone arrangement.

### What’s Changing?

Currently, Victorian seniors can only travel for free on weekends within **two neighbouring zones**. This has limited travel for those wanting to visit family, attend events, or explore further afield. Under the new changes, seniors will be able to:

- Travel **statewide for free on weekends**
- Save **up to $360 per year** in transport costs
- Explore destinations such as **Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Wodonga, and Warrnambool** without paying for public transport

### Boost for Regional Victoria

The move is expected to deliver an economic boost to regional tourism, encouraging travel beyond metro Melbourne and into local communities.

Since the introduction of the **regional fare cap in 2023**, more than **50 million discounted trips** have been taken, saving passengers **over $132 million**. Weekend travel by seniors is expected to rise with this new initiative, supported by **almost 200 extra V/Line services** added in recent years.

### Eligibility & How It Works

To access the free weekend travel, seniors must:

- Hold a **Victorian Seniors Card**
- Use a **Seniors myki card** to tap on and off as normal (charges will not apply)
- Carry their Seniors Card while travelling

Weekday travel will continue to be offered at a **50% discount** for eligible seniors.

### Who Qualifies for a Seniors Myki?

Victorian Seniors Card holders must:

- Be **permanent residents of Victoria**
- Be **aged 60 or over**
- Work **less than 35 hours per week**

### Government Statement

> “Costs can add up – especially for seniors – and I’m on their side.”
