# VIC's New 40km Speed Limits In Effect

The Allan Labor Government has introduced new protections for roadside workers across [Victoria](https://www.carexplore.com.au/tag/victoria/). From 1 July 2025, changes to road rule 79A are in effect, aimed at improving safety around vehicle incidents.

### What Are the New Rules?

Originally introduced in 2017, road rule 79A required drivers to:

- Slow to 40 km/h when passing stationary police, emergency, enforcement, or VicRoads Incident Response Service vehicles with flashing red, blue, magenta, or yellow lights.
- Approach these vehicles at a speed that would allow them to stop safely if needed, and only increase speed once a safe distance away.

As of 1 July 2025, this rule has been expanded. It now also covers:

- Accident and breakdown towing vehicles
- Roadside assistance vehicles
- All other incident response service vehicles

### Why Was the Rule Expanded?

A review of road rule 79A examined its scope, compliance rates, and safety benefits. The findings showed a clear need to broaden protections to include more types of roadside workers. This change is intended to improve safety not only for responders but also for the public who may be involved in or passing by an incident.
