# Your WA Speed Camera Fines Are Paying for This $63 Million Rollout

Western Australia is putting $63 million into road safety training for high school students, and the money comes out of safety camera fines. If you have copped a speed or mobile phone fine in WA, this is where it ended up.

The Cook Labor Government announced the expansion on 9 September 2026\. It takes the Road Smart program state-wide, reaching more than 23,500 high school students, with more than 750 sessions across 146 schools this year. Every WA student in Years 7 to 9 can now access it.

## Where the $63 million actually comes from

Funding is provided through the Road Trauma Trust Account. The government says 100 per cent of safety camera fines are spent on projects that save lives and reduce trauma on WA roads, and this program is one of them.

That is a direct line from your infringement notice to a Year 8 classroom. Every safety camera issuing fines in the state feeds the same account that pays for this.

## What students actually get

Road Smart is delivered by the Road Safety Commission. Students in Years 7 and 8 get road safety education sessions. Year 9 students get interactive role-playing through virtual reality and other digital platforms.

Schools book the Road Smart KickStart and Interactive incursions through the Road Safety Commission. The government describes it as a free service aligned to the WA curriculum.

There is money on top of that too. Grants of up to $5,000 are available exclusively to schools running a Road Smart incursion, to fund student-led behaviour change projects in their own communities.

## Kimberley and Pilbara students get it for the first time

The expansion is what puts more regional students in the room. Students in the Kimberley and the Pilbara can take part for the first time, so young people get road safety education regardless of where they live.

Road Safety Minister Jessica Stojkovski put the reasoning plainly:

> Road safety doesn't just start when you get the keys to a car, and we know that young people are overrepresented in road trauma statistics.

## What this changes for you on the road

Nothing, directly. This announcement is spending, not enforcement — it does not change a road rule, a fine, a demerit or a licensing requirement.

What is worth knowing is the loop it confirms. WA keeps widening camera enforcement — in June the Road Safety Commission installed the state's first school zone safety camera, on Soldiers Road in Mundijong, the first of 20 going into school zones over two years — and the government's stated position is that 100 per cent of that fine revenue goes back into road safety work like this. If you have a kid in Years 7 to 9, you can ask their school to book a session.
