The Albanese and Minns governments are moving forward with critical infrastructure projects for Western Sydney, signing a contract to upgrade a major traffic bottleneck in Sydney’s south west with contractor Seymour Whyte.

This project will deliver a new three-lane toll-free bridge over the Georges River and train lines at Liverpool. The upgrade will improve connections between the M5 Motorway, Moorebank Avenue, and the Hume Highway.
Key components of the upgrade include:
- Removing the existing weave on the M5 Motorway between Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway to improve safety and traffic flow for vehicles entering and exiting the motorway.
- Constructing a new underpass at Moorebank Avenue to link the M5 Motorway westbound directly to the Hume Highway.
- Upgrading the intersection between the M5 Motorway and Moorebank Avenue.

The current bridge over the Georges River carries more than 2,500 trucks each day from the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Precinct onto Sydney's motorway network. During the afternoon peak, traffic congestion builds as vehicles entering the motorway westbound at Moorebank Avenue merge with traffic aiming to exit at the Hume Highway. Truck traffic at this interchange is expected to grow as additional parts of the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Precinct become operational.
The Albanese and Minns governments have each committed $190 million to this upgrade as part of broader infrastructure investments across Western Sydney. The project is intended to support freight efficiency, reduce congestion, and enhance safety for all road users.
