Western Australia is introducing a fleet of advanced safety cameras in a renewed effort to improve road safety and reduce the number of road deaths and injuries across the state.

What’s Changing on WA Roads
Six new mobile safety camera trailers will be deployed across WA beginning in early 2025. These world-first, cutting-edge cameras will be capable of detecting a wide range of high-risk driving behaviours, including:
- Illegal mobile phone use
- Seatbelt offences
- Spot speed detection
- Point-to-point (average) speed enforcement
Additionally, two fixed safety camera sites along the Kwinana Freeway will be upgraded with the same technology.
Caution Period for Drivers
Before full enforcement begins, a caution period will be in place. Starting 26 January 2025, drivers caught using a mobile phone illegally or not wearing a seatbelt by these new cameras will receive a caution notice instead of a fine. The caution will inform drivers of the detection and provide an opportunity to change their behaviour before financial penalties are introduced.
Technology to Improve Road Safety
These advanced safety cameras are designed to operate anywhere, at any time, with the ability to simultaneously detect multiple types of offences. Their rollout supports the State Government’s broader road safety goals, particularly in cracking down on distracted and unsafe driving habits.

Reinforcing the Road Safety Mission
The safety camera initiative is funded by the Road Trauma Trust Account, which reinvests 100% of safety camera revenue into road safety projects. The introduction of these cameras is part of WA’s ongoing effort to reduce the number of lives lost on the road through both enforcement and public awareness.
WA drivers are urged to remain aware, buckle up, obey speed limits, and keep their focus on the road. The state’s new safety camera program sends a clear message: unsafe driving behaviour will not go unnoticed.
What to Expect Next
- Caution notices from 26 January 2025 for phone and seatbelt offences.
- Six mobile camera trailers rolled out across the state over six months.
- Upgrades to fixed cameras at key freeway sites.
As enforcement ramps up following the caution period, all motorists are encouraged to review and improve their driving habits in line with road safety laws. The new technology represents a major step forward in keeping Western Australian roads safe for everyone.
