Seven key road corridors in Sydney’s expanding south-west have been identified for future upgrades under a $65 million joint planning initiative by the Australian and New South Wales governments. The South West Sydney Roads – Planning Project is aimed at addressing congestion, improving safety, and supporting future housing and job growth.

Project Scope

The initiative will prepare business cases and planning investigations for 76.5 km of road corridors carrying more than 100,000 vehicles daily. These studies will guide staged improvements, including road widening, new entry and exit points, intersections, and town centre bypasses.

Four Key Corridors

The initial focus is on four major routes:

  • Hume Motorway (Narellan Road to Picton Road): A strategic options plan and access strategy will explore ways to improve traffic flow and entry/exit points on this freight corridor, which carries more than 52,000 vehicles daily.
  • Cowpasture Road (M7 Motorway to Camden Valley Way): Proposed widening from four to six lanes to support housing around Bradfield City and the Western Sydney Airport precinct. This route carries over 41,000 vehicles daily.
  • Camden Valley Way (M5 Motorway to Narellan Road): Planned widening from four to six lanes to support recent growth of more than 20,000 residents and 5,000 jobs.
  • Menangle Road (Tindall Street, Campbelltown to Cummins Road, Menangle Park): Widening proposed to increase capacity on this growing local corridor.

Three Additional Corridors

As part of the $65 million program, three further corridors will undergo planning:

  • Campbelltown Road (Hume Highway to Brooks Road): Expansion from two to four lanes for the 34,000 vehicles that use this corridor daily.
  • Appin Town Centre Bypass: A bypass to divert traffic away from the town centre.
  • Jersey Road (Oran Park to Bradfield): A planning study to support better transport connections between these two rapidly growing centres. Oran Park is expected to create more than 2,500 jobs by 2026.

Wider Infrastructure Program

These upgrades sit within a broader infrastructure investment pipeline for Western Sydney, including:

  • $2 billion for the toll-free M12 Motorway connecting the M7 Motorway to Western Sydney Airport.
  • $1 billion to upgrade Fifteenth Avenue, including six kilometres between Cowpasture and Devonshire roads.
  • $380 million to upgrade the M5 westbound between Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway.
  • $800 million for improvements to Elizabeth Drive.
