Motorists in Moruya and Malua Bay will soon notice new speed limits designed to improve road safety across the region. Starting from mid-June 2025, a range of roads in these areas will have reduced speed zones following a Transport for NSW review prompted by local concerns and police input.

Speed Limit Changes in Moruya

Several streets in Moruya will see changes to better align with the NSW Speed Zoning Standard and improve safety for all road users. Roads affected include:

  • Bruce Cameron Drive, Tallara Drive, Nugara Drive, Janari Close, Narambi Close, and South Head Road – speed reduced to 60 km/h
  • Larrys Mountain Road and Pollwombra Road – speed reduced to 80 km/h

These changes are in response to a high crash rate and the presence of vulnerable road users along these routes.

Updates for Malua Bay

In Malua Bay, the following changes will take place:

  • Eastern end of The Ridge Road – speed reduced from 100 km/h to 60 km/h
  • Section of Link Road – speed reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h
  • Sections of Burri Way, Tallgums Way, and Ridge Avenue – speed reduced from 70 km/h to 60 km/h

These residential and connecting roads are used frequently by pedestrians and local traffic, prompting the reduction to better match road conditions and improve overall safety.

Why the Changes Are Happening

The review was part of a broader effort to ensure that speed zones align with real-world road environments. Factors considered include crash history, traffic volumes, the physical road layout, and pedestrian activity.

The new speed limits are consistent with the Safe System approach adopted nationally. This framework focuses on building a road environment where simple mistakes do not lead to fatal outcomes.

Implementation and Community Notification

The new speed limit signs will begin installation on Wednesday 11 June 2025, weather permitting. Electronic message boards will be set up before and after the changes, and the community will be informed through council communication channels.

Motorists are urged to follow signage and adjust driving habits during and after the installation. The process may involve temporary traffic control to ensure the safe setup of new signs.

Ongoing Commitment to Safer Roads

Transport for NSW continues to assess road networks to ensure speed limits are appropriate for each area. These changes in Moruya and Malua Bay reflect the commitment to reducing road trauma and building safer communities.

Drivers are reminded to travel at safe speeds, remain alert to changes, and always drive to the conditions.
