The Allan Labor Government is investing $210 million to improve safety across Victoria’s local road network, delivering upgrades designed to reduce road trauma and make everyday journeys safer.

Program Overview
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne announced that more than 200 projects will be rolled out under the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program. Local councils will receive up to $2 million each to plan, design, and deliver targeted road safety upgrades.
The program will fund measures such as:
- New and improved pedestrian crossings
- Intersection upgrades
- Speed-calming infrastructure
These initiatives aim to make local travel safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.
Role of Local Councils
Local governments manage 87 per cent of Victoria’s road network, including the suburban and regional streets used daily for school runs, commuting, and local travel. The program is designed to strengthen councils’ capacity to deliver road safety infrastructure where it is needed most.

Road Safety Strategy Alignment
The Safe Local Roads and Streets Program supports the Victorian Government’s Road Safety Strategy 2030, which has two key goals:
- Halve road deaths by 2030
- Eliminate all road deaths by 2050
This funding is part of a broader push to build safer road networks across the state.
Broader Investment in Roads
In addition to the $210 million program, the government has allocated $976 million through the Better Roads Blitz. This separate initiative is focused on repairing potholes and resurfacing roads across Victoria, ensuring smoother and safer driving conditions.
