Nearly 500 train drivers are now trained and ready to operate services through the Allan Labor Government’s Metro Tunnel project, which is set to open later in 2025—one year ahead of schedule.
VIC Drivers Get a New Major Win
Over 21,000 new and upgraded car parks delivered at 51 train stations across Victoria, improving commuter access and safety.

Driver Training Program
- Around 100 new drivers were recruited in 2022.
- Recruits completed a 44-week program including:
- Classroom training
- Simulator sessions
- On-the-job training
Technology Training
Hundreds of drivers have been trained on the Metro Tunnel’s advanced systems:
- High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT)
- New signalling technology
- Victoria’s first platform screen doors
As part of trial operations:
- Drivers have collectively travelled more than 265,000 kilometres during testing—over six laps of the Earth.
Station Staff Preparation
More than 200 station staff are also undergoing training to prepare for the opening of the new stations. Staff roles include:
- Station Masters
- Senior Station Officers
- Station Officers
- Station Assistants
These staff will operate across the five new underground stations:
- Arden
- Parkville
- State Library
- Town Hall
- Anzac
Project Overview
The Metro Tunnel is the largest change to Melbourne’s rail network in over four decades. The twin tunnels and five new underground stations will:
- Improve service frequency
- Increase capacity on the City Loop
- Support future network expansion
