The Crisafulli Government has allocated $6.9 million in the 2025/26 financial year for the installation and maintenance of flashing school zone signs across Queensland.

QLD’s Worst Highway Get’s Fixed
Bruce Hwy gets $412M for safety upgrades in QLD Budget, part of a $9B plan with lane widening, new rest areas, & intersection fixes.

Safety Impact

Research shows flashing school zone signs reduce the number of motorists exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/h by 45 per cent. These signs are being rolled out to 100 high-risk school zones to improve safety for children travelling to and from school.

Speeding in School Zones

In 2024, 12,384 infringement notices were issued across Queensland for speeding in 40 km/h school zones. More than 63 school-aged children were injured in crashes within school zones, and around 30 of these children required hospitalisation.

Selection of School Zones

The locations for the new signs were chosen based on:

  • Crash history
  • Pedestrian activity
  • Traffic volume
  • Speed limits
  • Visibility concerns
  • Feedback from school communities
QLD Removed Speed Camera Signs
Queensland dropped roadside speed camera signs in 2015, replacing them with marked vans to boost safety and reduce crashes.
