The Victorian Government is taking bold steps to transform the inner west of Melbourne with a sweeping new plan that will reroute thousands of heavy trucks off residential streets.

No-Truck Zones Coming to Melbourne's West
Six 24-hour No-Truck Zones will come into effect once the West Gate Tunnel opens later in 2025. These zones aim to improve road safety, air quality, and noise levels for residents across:
- Francis Street and Somerville Road, Yarraville
- Buckley Street and Moore Street, Footscray
- Blackshaws Road, Altona North
- Hudsons Road, Spotswood
These measures are part of the Allan Labor Government's broader efforts to create more liveable neighbourhoods in Victoria.
Who Can Still Access the Zones?
The new regulations won't block all heavy vehicles. Exemptions will apply to:
- Buses, tow trucks, waste and concrete trucks
- Two-axle trucks not carrying shipping containers
- Emergency vehicles, police, and trucks garaged in the zone
- Vehicles for deliveries, repairs, construction, or maintenance
This ensures essential services can continue uninterrupted while reducing unnecessary through-traffic.

Smart Cameras to Monitor Compliance
Roadside smart cameras will automatically detect and assess whether vehicles qualify for exemptions. Trucks caught violating the zone rules may be fined.
Earlier this month, Sensor Dynamics was awarded the contract to install and manage these camera systems, which will feed into the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) enforcement program.
Community Trials and Consultations
The changes are based on a 2022 trial and ongoing consultation with local communities and freight operators. These trials tested curfews and truck restrictions in the inner west, setting the groundwork for broader implementation.
A Statement from the Minister
Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne said:
"These regulations and the smart cameras will help us take thousands of trucks a day off local streets right across the inner west, improving safety and air quality for the community when the West Gate Tunnel opens later this year."
Why This Matters to VIC Drivers
This shift is part of a bigger transport vision to modernise Victoria's freight routes and reduce the burden on families living in traffic-heavy suburbs. It’s also expected to enhance safety for all road users, especially in high-pedestrian areas.
